The vibrant tableau of India’s tribal communities stretches from the misty villages of the Himalayan belt to the sun-baked dunes of Rajasthan, from the lush corners of the Northeast to the southernmost tip of the subcontinent. These indigenous groups — collectively known as Adivasis — represent a cultural mosaic of language, religion, festivals, cuisine, dance, and music that is both ancient and enduring.
Living far from the pulse of urban modernity and economic development, they carry a powerful sense of identity — one that thrives on tradition, resilience, and community. What fascinated me most was the rich duality they embody — from matriarchal to patriarchal structures, from joyful expression to silent endurance.
Despite making up nearly 9% of India’s population, tribal communities often remain overlooked and underrepresented. It is this very obscurity that compelled me to illustrate their lives — to capture not just their vibrant culture, but also their quiet strength and unspoken stories.
This series is both a visual homage and a call for recognition — celebrating the colourful, complex, and deeply human world of India’s tribes.
